Training: Covering Extremism & Conflict in the Rural West
WHEN: Thursday, July 8, 12pm
Last year was intense for journalists across the West, including journalists in rural areas who might not previously had much experience covering high-conflict demonstrations.
The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and the DART Center for Journalism and Trauma is hosting a training on this very topic, specific to rural areas of the Western U.S.
In an expert-led discussion, participants will learn about media safety and building resilience when reporting on issues such as white separatism, militias, and domestic terrorism. Particular attention will be paid to the lived experience of the local newsrooms, freelancers, and journalists actively engaged in community-based reporting on these issues, as well as specific forms of intimidation aimed at journalists who present as Indigenous, Black, Latino, Asian, or female.
